Many engaged couples opt to hire a wedding DJ to provide the music for their wedding reception, but this can quickly add hundreds of dollars to your total wedding bill. Your wedding day will likely end up one of the most important days of your lives, and you want your favorite music to feature prominently in the mix, but hiring a DJ can be costly. As a viable alternative consider being your own wedding DJ. This does not mean that you or your future spouse will run back and forth from the CD player to the dance floor between songs. With modern technology, you'll be able to arrange a wedding reception musical program that will include all your favorite songs and save you money in the process.
Step 1: Choose Your Music
Chances are you have a wide assortment of favorite music you wish to hear at your wedding. It could be a particular generation or a number of specific songs. Having a Do It Yourself DJ means spending some time well before the wedding planning it all out. Start with a list that you and your fiancé/fiancée make when you are doing some planning. Write down every song you'd both like to hear and narrow down the list accordingly. Figure on about 15 songs per hour.
Step 2: Gather the Music in One Place
If you are using an iPod, make sure it has enough free space to hold all your songs for the reception. Also, make sure it is in good working order. If you have to purchase the music from an online music store, do so and rip all other music you have on CDs to your computer. Gather it all in one location so it is easy to arrange as you wish.
Step 3: Order the Music
Decide what order you would like the music to be played for your reception. If you want it to be random, this step can be forgone. If, however, you have a song for the first dance, you may want to arrange it.
Step 4: Test the System
Put all of the music onto your iPod or, if using your laptop, open up the media player. With external speakers and an interface that links your computer or iPod with the speakers, test the system before the day of the wedding to make sure it will work and get all the kinks out of it. You do not want to worry about this on your wedding day.
Step 5: Arranging for the Reception
Arrange for a person to get to the reception site before the wedding party, turn on the system and prepare it for use. Queue up the first song, and when the time comes hit 'play'. Have somebody check it periodically throughout the night to make sure there are no problems.
Being your own wedding DJ will not only save money, it will allow you to hear exactly the music you want on your special day.
